The version v1.07.01 of MANATEE software dedicated to the electromagnetic and NVH design of electric motors has been released the 13th June 2018.

Key features

Simulation workflow
  • a dedicated skew optimization environment has been developed and validated, to help the user optimizing the rotor skewing pattern in terms of acoustic noise, torque ripple and torque reduction.
  • fast and accurate electromagnetic noise and vibration calculation in highly saturated machines is now possible using MANATEE accelerated coupling with FEMM based on flux distribution lookup table
  • acoustic noise maps in torque/speed plane including traction and braking can be quickly calculated based on spectrogram synthesis algorithm - this is particularly useful when studying NVH of electric vehicles (EV/HEV)
  • new slot types have been implemented: type 16 and type 53
  • Simulink model has been updated to account for randomized PWM. This is a well-known noise reduction technique to spread the excitation spectrum of electromagnetic forces and reduce the roughness of PWM noise.
  • import of the flux distribution from third party electromagnetic software has been extended to outer rotor case (when flux is calculated in rotating frame)
  • demagnetization, eccentricities and pole shifting have been extended from permeance/mmf model and subdomain models to FEMM model. Different shifting angles or demagnetization rate can be applied to each pole to study the effect of asymmetries on the electric motor NVH behaviour.
  • electromagnetic models have been extended to handle multiphase electrical machines
  • subdomain model has been extended to account for stator notches and stator flux barriers, and to import a user-defined magnetization pattern
  • field calculation inside the lamination based on subdomain model can be carried, the full magnetic field can be plot and animated
  • magnetomotive forces of PMSM, WRSM and SCIM can now be computed by FEMM instead of permeance mmf model for higher accuracy
  • fineness of the FEMM model mesh can now be easily improved
  • subdomain model has been extended for solid rotor induction machine (SRIM)
Structural mechanics
  • the automated coupling with Ansys has been fully validated, and Ansys can be directly called by MANATEE to compute the Frequency Response Functions. This has been validated comparing analytic model of MANATEE and coupling with Ansys or Optistruct:

  • the projection methodology of magnetic stress waves from airgap to stator tooth as lumped magnetic forces has been further validated
  • post-processing of lumped tooth forces has been improved, lumped magnetic forces can now be exported for use in third party structural software (e.g. LMS, Romax)
  • calculation of synthetic magnetic forces per tooth has been validated and can be calculated either based on Virtual Work Principle or Maxwell stress
  • possibility to make an operational deflection shape at a specific speed with plot_VS_ODS
  • sound synthesis feature has been extended from variable speed to single speed case
  • spectrogram synthesis algorithm has been extended to account for user-defined control law (e.g. Id/Iq function of speed).
  • the management of outer rotor topologies has been improved, in particular the sound spectrum can be calculated in the rotating frame or in the steady frame
Sensitivity study and optimization
  • sensitivity study post processsing have been improved. Additional getters have been defined to easily include in optimization and sensitivity studies some specific outputs such as acoustic noise at a specific speed (get_ASPL_freq) or frequency (get_ASPL_speed), the level of a specific vibration/noise harmonic orders (get_VS_ASWL_order, get_VS_Ar_order), the level of a specific radial / tangential force harmonic (get_Fr_freq).


New validation cases

  • additional validation cases including effect of pole demagnetization, pole displacement, eccentricities


  • IPMSM tutorial has been updated


  • export options have been improved, for instance it is possible to export sound power level at variable speed in Excel sheet per electrical order
  • the analytic harmonic identification tools have been extended to accound for rotor rotation direction and induction machines
  • compatibility with Linux has been improved
  • signal processing has been improved to handle spectral leakage, windowing is now possible
  • simulation process is now more robust to wrong user inputs, with more Warning messages and hyperlinks to online MANATEE articles
  • calculation time has been reduced taking into account antiperiodicities
