December 2017: MANATEE v1.06.05, sensitivity studies, psychoacoustics

New MANATEE release v1.06.05

MANATEE (Magnetic Acoustic Noise Analysis Tool for Electrical Engineering) software logo

EOMYS is pursuing the development of MANATEE software, the first simulation software dedicated to fast and accurate assessment of electromagnetic noise and vibrations in electrical machines both in basic and detailed design phases:

  • Wound Rotor Synchronous Machine (WRSM) is now available, including damper bar "slotting effect"
  • possibility to enforce airgap flux distribution (e.g. coming from third party electromagnetic software) at variable speed
  • possibility to simplify the machine definition when importing the airgap flux distribution
  • Frequency Response Function based on unit rotating waves is now fully automated with OptiStruct (no need to manually execute TCL script)
  • possibility to add a room constant in Input.Simu.room_cstt for sound pressure level calculation including reverberation
  • more than 15 additional validation cases on electromagnetics & acoustics

All the new features of MANATEE v1.06.05 are available on our website.

Ongoing MANATEE developments

  • A sensitivity study can now be automatically run in MANATEE to study the effect of natural frequency variations on acoustic noise and vibration levels. This enables to run robust design optimizations using noise dispersion as an additional criterion in multiobjective optimizations. MANATEE can also be used to run user-defined sensitivity studies on continuous and discrete variables, including properties of the material database.
  • The Electromagnetic Vibration Synthesis algorithm to speed up noise and vibration calculation of structural FEA models under electromagnetic excitations is being extended from TCL language (suitable for Altair® Optistruct) to APDL language (suitable for Ansys® Mechanical).

Zoom on MANATEE feature

MANATEE fast electromagnetic and vibroacoustic models allows to explore the electromagnetic and NVH impact of complex skew shape with a high number of axial slices. Both rotor and stator can be skewed with linear, curved, stepped, V-shape / herringbone or user-defined skew shapes. More details can be found in the dedicated skewing set-up article.

Conferences and Events

MANATEE research license competition has been closed and the winning project is the team from University of Technology of Compiègne, France, on the vibroacoustics of synchronous reluctance machines.

EOMYS will be present at the 11th International Symposium on Electric and Magnetic Fields, EMF 2018, in Darmstadt, Germany, from 10 to 12 April 2018.

Publication of the Month

The publication work of the month is: F. Lin, S. Zuo, W. Deng and S. Wu, "Noise Prediction and Sound Quality Analysis of Variable-Speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor," in IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, vol. 32, no. 2, pp. 698-706, June 2017 doi: 10.1109/TEC.2017.2651034

The authors of this work analyze the sound quality of a PWM-fed Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (SPMSM) in terms of roughness, loudness, and fluctuation strength using both measurements and simulation results. A 2D FEA electromagnetic model is used in current source mode, applying experimental currents to include the harmonic effects of PWM and back-electromotive force.

This work mentions that electromagnetic semi-analytical or analytical models cannot be used for not purely surface-mounted PMSM, but this type of topology can be modelled in MANATEE hybrid subdomain models coupled with FEMM.

MANATEE can also be used to carry similar psychoacoustic studies of electromagnetically-excited noise using third party software such as LEA®. This way psychoacoustic indices such as loudness and roughness can be estimated besides A-weighted sound power and sound pressure levels. MANATEE can therefore be used as a sound quality design tool of electrical machines.
